Enquiries come from right across Central Coast Council's area. Ten suburbs have a page because a government map or planning control says something about the ground there that changes how a dig is done; the rest, Gosford and Terrigal among them, are covered without one.

On the Woy Woy peninsula, Council's acid sulfate soils map puts most of Woy Woy's residential land in Class 3 and most of Umina Beach's in Class 4. Bateau Bay's coastal side is windblown sand that can slump when dug. Berkeley Vale's low land is largely floodplain, and Blue Haven is the one suburb here where Council's Wallarah Creek flood mapping reaches homes. On Wamberal Beach, Council's coastal controls go down to the foundations, and all of Gwandalan's residential land lies inside a mine subsidence district. In the growth areas, Hamlyn Terrace, Lake Munmorah and Woongarrah carry release-area controls on contamination or earthworks.

One council, several maps
Every suburb here is in Central Coast Council's area, so the same local plan and development controls apply in each. What changes from place to place is which map a lot falls on: the acid sulfate soils classes, Council's flood planning precincts, the coastal hazard areas behind Wamberal Beach, urban release areas with their own development control chapters, and Subsidence Advisory NSW's mine subsidence districts in the north, where a lot's guideline decides what can be built.
Suburbs without a page
A suburb without its own page is covered all the same. Pages were written only where the public record gave us a fact about the ground true of that suburb and not its neighbours; enquiries from the other eight suburbs this site serves, Gosford included, are passed on the same way.
